mr. toolman

With school rapidly becoming a distant memory (let's ignore my final next week for the sake of argument), the past two nights have been spent doing house projects and once again enjoying each other's company by eating birthday cake and watching a rather bad mini-series on the sci fi chanel. Last night we carefully installed the baby gate at the top of the stairs. The last time we installed this gate we made a number of mistakes and spent almost two hours feeling more and more frustrated as we broke screws into our old banisters. This time we measured many, many times and completed the job in about an hour.

Tonight we (o.k., Rob... I was moving bathroom rugs around) turned to installing a cat door in the basement door. This project was anticipated greatly as for the past week we've had the door open with a baby gate that we must open and close again and again as the cats meow to come upstairs (for our company) or go downstairs (for their food and litter). The project went really well.

Here's Rob cutting a hole in our door. The saw was really loud.

Next, he installed the little door pieces around the hole.

The finished product.

Leela checks it out. The door comes with a personalized label. Very cute.

  • Dude! That's a cool looking door--it looks like it's got some kind of grooming function built into it? If so, Oreo might be getting one of those somewhere in our house...

  • It's a neat project, Rob, but how about some pictures of Beth moving the bath rugs around? I'd like more info on that. How fluffy are they? Colors? Did the task require any power tools? Will you be hanging them anywhere when they're not in use? On the side of the tub? The shower curtain? (I'm trying to avoid reading more of this not-so-great student essay in front of me.) And how are the bathrooms coming along in general? Will mine come with a shave mirror in the shower? Did you already stock it with travel-size sundries? Will I still be allowed to take them home with me? (I was allowed to take those home with me, right?) Did I ever send you a check for that toilet seat? If not, I'll buy the beer and Chipotle on our next visit.

    All right, back to grading...

  • That door is so cool! I'm still trying to convince a certain someone that we should get a doggie door. Perhaps when I finally win the argument, Rob can come help cut a hole in our wall.

  • Will your cats fit through that door?

  • one more question--what does *your* cat hole sign say?

  • Wow, guess you guys like the cat hole. Mark the rug arranging was pretty complicated, so I'm not sure I can break it down for you. There was a lot of organizing and arranging and rearranging to do. But you're welcome to our travel-size toothpaste and shampoo anytime you come by. :)

Yes, the cats actually fit through the hole. Even the husky Leela. And the built-in brush seems to be collecting some hair so obviously it is doing some good work. A good thing as we're not very good at brushing our cats. Highly recommend! If we told you what was on the label, though, we would be giving away our street address, which we'd rather not do online. But when you visit you can take a look.

  • There's a big difference between cutting a hole in a door and cutting a hole in your house.
